Week 7 Day 2 Sumo Deadlift made 495 lbs my bitch

It was a go big or go home broken workout today. My top set was programmed for 475 lbs but I decided to up my game and go for the 5 plate a side barrier.  End 2017 in style! The weight actually felt not bad, but as the reps go on it really strains the moose milk. My biggest dilemma is my grip at this point. The hook grip is OUT for a few reasons. Because of my hand size and finger length the only viable grip will be a over under. I'm now training the over under grip right after my deadlift workout is done. I setup the bar in the rack so I only have to lift it maybe 6 inches into a standing static hold for about 5 to 10 seconds. This places my hands on knurling, instead of bare metal. This achieves two things, you train your grip strength and your body and mind get to feel a heavier weight. I worked my way up in weight 405, 455, 495, 545 and 585 lbs. The last weight I could hold, but I could start to feel the skin ripping just above my calluses so I placed the weight down. I was not surprised, done it before many years ago, normally on my last deadlift attempts in a competition. I will have to start filing my calluses down, which will hopefully work or not!
Volume wise this will be my peak, come week 9 I will push a few heavier sets to test my 1 rep max but no all out sets like today.
During the warm up sets for the deadlift I was also supersetting in weighted walks with a trap bar. I have written about this exercise before, very simple to execute but I believe it also helps to better prepare you for the heavier lifts to come in your workout. By the time I reach the work sets, I stop doing weighted walks. All energy now goes towards the deadlift.
Static holds were supersetted with kettlebell one legged SLDL. This one is light weight, easy on the lower back but man did it ever give me hamstring DOMS the last time I did it :).
My last exercise was good old squats. I thought about coming back later in the day to finish these NOPE.
Increased my work set weight by 10 lbs from the last workout and they felt pretty good.
Happy New Year gym rats!!
